14:46: In the western Pacific Ocean, near Honshu, Japan, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 quake occurred at a depth of 24 km (15 mi) triggering a massive tsunami that destroys entire towns and villages along the Pacific coast and kills about 20,000 people. The earthquake’s epicenter was 373 km (231 miles) away from Tokyo. The initial earthquake lasted for 6 minutes. 15:27: The first tsunami strikes. Around 16:00: Within an hour after the quake a tsunami measuring 30 feet high washes over the Japanese coast. The tsunami wave that hit the shore of Japan was 77.4 feet high in one place. It traveled at about 800km/hour. About 92.5 percent of Japan's casualties were victims of drowning. Cars, boats and trains are swept away. Buildings collapse. Roads and highways are severed. At least 6 million homes -- 10 percent of Japan's households are without electricity. Radiation levels at the Fukushima nuclear reactor damaged and leaked out radioactive liquid for over a week.
